$6 million dispensed to local schools from Govt

The government has distributed a total of six million tala to both private and government-owned schools as part of its school support scheme.

"This is an initiative that the government is always trying to push forward more with each year," said Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi.

"It is the government’s most important push to ensure Samoa's children are well educated, and this is why we’ve reached out to help with monetary funds," he added.

"This initiative started with one $50,000 tala in its early years. Now we are at $6 million, and it won’t stop here. Once we reach a $100 million to hand out we will know we’ve done well," he said.

The initiative is aimed at addressing shortcomings in the education sector like poor exam results for mathematics.

Director of Education for the Catholic Church, Aeau Chris Hazelman said there are many factors.

"The biggest one is because there are not enough teachers anymore, the growing population and the number of schools have exceeded the number of teachers we have, unlike before," he added.

"So the issue here isn’t that we don’t have the proper teachers with qualifications, we do, but we don’t have enough by ratio to students and schools," he said.

Students are into the second week of the 2016 school year.
