Decomposed body of homeless man found in Moamoa

Police in Samoa have found the badly decomposed body of a man in Moamoa.

The deceased is a resident of Divine Mercy Shelter which accommodates homeless people.

Police spokesperson Sua Le Mamea Tiumalu says they know the deceased is from Faleula and lived under care of the Catholic-owned shelter.

The deceased body was discovered some distance away from the refuge.

“From our current information and estimation from our investigations, he must have been dead for at least three to four weeks. The body is in bad shape, and nearly impossible to identify,” he said.

The deceased had teeth marks on his neck which are suspected to be from canines.

It is also understood canines might have taken the body to where it was found.

“Right now I cannot say there are any signs of foul play in the case because we have just ordered a post mortem. Until then, we cannot speculate on anything at all,” he added.

While the deceased has been identified, Sua says no one has come to claim his body for a proper burial.

Investigations are ongoing into the cause of death.

Sua says if no one claims the body at the end of their investigation, police will take responsibility for the man’s burial.

This is the second police case involving the discovery of a decomposed body in the past few weeks.

Sua says they are awaiting the results of a post mortem from the first case.
