The expedition of the 4 amazing women rowing across the Pacific Ocean from Hawaii to Samoa for 97 days did not go unnoticed with Digicel Samoa Management and staff.
Meg Dyos, Lizzane van Vuuren, Emma Michell and Laura Penhaul’s began their journey from San Francisco on 20th April 2015, the challenge was to row an impressive 8,446miles to Cairns, Australia in a 29ft pink rowing board called Doris. First stop was Hawaii, second stop was Samoa where the team will then head to cairns, their final destination and setting a new world record as the first ever fours team to row the Pacific Ocean.
Digicel Samoa following the extraordinary journey got in contact with the team to give the girls support and started planning for the day the girls arrive. Digicel Samoa Management and staff started a campaign in recognition of the extraordinary and courage of these women and started the hype in the media. Businesses, Hotels and Restaurants got together through Digicel and started organizing accommodation, meals and the media for the girls.
Digicel Samoa was in the forefront of this initiative that saw the girls in awe of the tradition and the warmth shown on the day of their arrival. They were welcomed with Fresh local flowers and leis, lots of cheering and local drums, pampering and a full media house. The welcoming crew was attended by the British Consulate, Heather Brenda Latu and the Australian High Commissioner, Sue Langford who did the welcoming speech facilitated by Digicel’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Leaupepe Talai Lene.
Digicel offered the girls 4 smartphones with enough data and credit to contact their families while in Samoa. They will be leaving Samoa shores for their final destination on Sunday, 8th November after their 7 days of rest.
These amazing women who call themselves the coxless crew are raising funds and awareness for two charities; Walking with the wounded and Breast Cancer.
