Former Samoa 7s coach eyes Fiji 7s coach position

Former Samoa 7s coach Damien McGrath wants to coach the Fiji 7s team.

McGrath told the Fiji Sun that he has applied for the position.

“Yes, I did apply,” McGrath said from England over the weekend.

Applications for the post left vacant at the expiry of the contract of Ben Ryan closed last Friday.

The Fiji Rugby Union board is expected to vet the applications this week.

McGrath is a former professional rugby league player who developed a successful career as a coach first in rugby league and then rugby union.

He is an education graduate who has written and lectured extensively in coaching skills.

McGrath was appointed Samoa’s coach for a two year term in August last year.

At that time SRU Chief Executive Faleomavaega Vincent Fepuleai said McGrath's appointment is an opportunity for some much-needed invigoration of the country's sevens programme.

However, early last month, McGrath was sacked by the SRU following a board meeting.

Fepuleai said the failure to reach Rio played a major role in the Board's final decision.
