The U.S. Embassy Port Moresby congratulates Sophie Yaruso from Papua New Guinea for being selected to participate in the ‘Youth and Politics Foreign Reporting Tour’.
This is an initiative of the United States Department of State’s Foreign Press Center (FPC).
Yaruso, who has a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Political Science from the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), is a general rounds news reporter and anchor with Digicel PNG Limited’s TVWan News. In her role, she focuses her coverage on youth development, women, sports and political issues in Papua New Guinea.
Yaruso is amongst 25 reporters from around the world who will be participating in this program from September 20-29 in the United States.
As a participant, she will receive training as well as file reports while on tour. The Foreign Press Center will arrange on-the-record interviews and engagement with youth activists from diverse backgrounds, especially on university campuses, as well as those working with nonpartisan organisations, special interest groups, think tanks, scholars and political campaigns at the national, state and local levels.
This will provide the visiting journalists the opportunity to report on young Americans and people who work with, and/or study the role of youth in the U.S. political process.
The program has started in Washington D.C. and will move on to key battleground states of Virginia and Colorado, where all participants will observe youth activism.
Yaruso, along with all program participants, will also have the opportunity to meet with students at the American University, University of Virginia, University of Denver and University of Colorado.
