Jarryd Hayne hints at Fijian return

He was good enough to be selected for New South Wales' State of Origin side, but Jarryd Hayne is unlikely to suit up for Australia in this year's Rugby League World Cup.

Hayne has all but committed to suit up for Fiji in the World Cup, having represented the Island nation for four matches before a breakout NRL season with Parramatta in 2009 saw him garner the attention of Australian selectors.

The Gold Coast Titans' fullback has represented both Fiji and Australia at World Cups, in 2008 and 2013 respectively, with 12 tries and a winner's medal to his name.

However, with the depth of young Australian talent coming through, Hayne believes his time in the green and gold might be up.

"Australia has got a ton of talent, a lot of guys younger than me," Hayne told NRL.com. "It's obviously up to the coach but for me I'm probably looking forward to playing with Fiji at the moment, knowing how much talent and depth Australia's got."

"It's definitely something that I look forward to. It's been great for me to play for Australia and Fiji, it's been awesome."

International rugby league eligibility rules state players who are not selected to play for a tier-one nation (Australia, New Zealand and England) can play for another country if they qualify.

Should Hayne don the Fijian jersey this year, it will likely boost the side's chances of qualifying for the knockout stages of the tournament.

Fiji are already favoured to come out on top of Pool D, with USA, Wales and Italy also in the group. Should they win the pool, they'll set up a quarterfinals match against the second placed team in Pool B - which features New Zealand, Samoa, Scotland and Tonga
