Hand grenade that caused bomb scare in Samoa a dud

A hand grenade found in a package that forced the closure of a town in Samoa has been declared harmless.

The discovery prompted widespread interest and speculation after it was found in Savai'i.

But the police have said it was empty and was nothing more than a souvenir.

Acting Police Commissioner, Papalii Monalisa Tiai-Keti said two officers from the Ministry of Police whp were trained whislt working in the United Nations safely removed the grenade and destroyed it in a safe place in Savaii.

The officers were assisted by the Ministry of Natural Resources amd Environment and Customs Department.
