Orders flood in for Samoa-made menstrual pads

A line of reusable and environmentally-friendly menstrual care products designed and sewn by Pacific women for Pacific women is reported to be in high demand.

The washable cotton pads made by MANA Care aim to lessen plastic waste and provide local women with an affordable option.

Isabell Rasch, who founded the firm with Angelica Salele-Sefo, said they have just opened for business and have already been flooded with orders.

She said grant money from a UN environmental award has enabled them to hire Samoan staff from the island of Savaii.

"Demand has already kicked off [and] so we were in a recruiting process and because, like we said, this is a business owned by two Samoan women and we want to give back to not only empowering Samoan people, but Samoan women."

Isabell Rasch said the reusable products are more affordable for local women.
