Preliminary votes show one new Pacific MP

The preliminary election results show at least one new Pacific MP will enter Parliament.

Labour's current position, with 35.8 per cent of the party vote, would secure a seat in the house for first-time list candidate 'Anahila Kanongata'a-Suisuiki.

The longtime social worker is likely to join fellow Tongan Labour MP Jenny Salesa according to the Electoral Commission's current list of successful candidates.

However the National Party, which currently holds 46 per cent of the party vote, may still get a new Pacific voice through Agnes Loheni, who is of Samoan descent and is next on the list to enter Parliament if the party gains an additional seat from special votes.
