Samoa measles death toll climbs to 48

There have been four more deaths in the past 24 hours taking the death toll in Samoa’s measles epidemic to 48.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Health confirmed a total of 3,530 measles cases were reported to the Disease Surveillance Team, since the outbreak started.

There were 173 recorded in the last 24 hours.

The vast majority of deaths are children under the age of four-years.

There are currently 191 measles cases who are in-patients at all health facilities.

A total of 32,743 vaccinations were completed before the Mass Vaccination Campaign.

Since the activation of the Mass Vaccination Campaign on 20 November 2019, the Ministry has successfully vaccinated 57,132 individuals, of that 42,611 were vaccinated in Upolu and 14,521 in Savaii.

The disease is believed to have spread to Samoa from Auckland, New Zealand.
