Samoan emerging designer features ‘show stopping’ resort wear at Fiji Fashion Week

Emerging Samoan designer, Dane Mulinu’u Fabricius showcased his first attempt at resort wear line of clothes at the Fiji Fashion Week (FFW) in Suva last night.

And if comments from the fashion crowd on social media are anything to go by, there were some ‘show stopping’ pieces that were “fabulous” .

Fabricius, whose clothing line is known as DMF, was one of 13 emerging and established designers from Fiji and the Pacific who participated in the Pacific Island Resort category.

Speaking to Loop Samoa a few hours before the show yesterday, he said he was delighted and honoured to be part of FFW.

“I have been in the industry for a year exactly, so I am still new to the game and to be invited by the Ellen Whippy-Knight and showcase my island Samoa, it’s an honour. Fiji is a big name in the Pacific Islands and it’s another door for us in Samoa and an opportunity for us to show our designs and hope the world will see it,” Fabricius said.

“I have completely changed my design for this evening from my line because when I first started designing it was static more on urban tour kind of touch.”

Fabricius described his designs as dark and bright and the two combined makes it a perfect one.

He explained that his designs are a continuation of his previous line called the ‘Teine Sa’- forbidden women, but tantalizing and coincides with the cyclone season.

“Literally called “cocoa Booty during cyclone season, “he added.

Fabricius said he aims to keep his designs funky and fun and which describes him and his work.

“From the eyes of DMF, my design is very sexy and it will make a woman look sexy in it and give her that confidence.”

“Even men too, they too will look muscular and feel accepted and confident,” he added.

The DMF line of clothes showcased last night are being sold during FFW.

“I hope my designs allow Fijians to enjoy and hopefully they buy it as it would be on sale after the show. Fiji Fashion Week allows us Pacific Islanders to showcase our designs and brands to the world,” he said.

“If the world is not ready for us we are gonna make them ready”

Fabricius said he uses cotton and he designs outfits that fit anyone with any shape or size.

“My designs are very fitting and stretches to 14-16 sizes. It also complements the skin tone as lot of us Polynesians have slightly darker skin and have a nice caramel tone,” he said.

With so many opportunities and emerging designers, Fabricius wants to carve his name amongst the best in the markets as well as attract buyers.

“It’s always a learning process for me and I am expecting that my buyers and followers are happy. I look to do my best and be a trendsetter next year,” he said.

Fabricius was the winner of the emerging designer’s category at the Samoa Fashion Week last year.

Last December, he also showcased his fashion line at the International Pacific Runway Fashion Show in Sydney, Australia.

To the young emerging designers, Fabricius said “please do not waste time. Look around, be creative and like I always say own it, outshine and make it work.”
