Samoa host football course for girls

Football Federation Samoa and Samoa Rugby Union spent the International Women’s Day holding introductory courses for girls.

“It’s hard for girls growing up to play soccer, or any sport,” Samoa national team player Camilla Ah Ki told newspaper Samoa Observer.

Ah Ki and her teammates wanted to show the girls some skills and what it’s like to play football.

“We want to show them that we can do it, it’s not only boys that can play soccer or any certain sport,” Ah Ki said.

The event took place at Tuanaimato Football Fields and, in addition to the football and rugby workshops, included a poetry competition sponsored by Women in Leadership Samoa and talks from the Ministry of Health and women’s organisation Brown Girl Woke.

The event, which was in cooperation with Samoa Rugby Union saw girls from Vaimauga College, Sagaga College, Papauta Girls’ College, Vaiusu Primary, Vaimea Primary, Robert Louis Primary, Lepa Primary and Adventist’s Primary, as well as rugby clubs Aleipata, Taga, Aana Blues and Apia Maroons, take part in the events.

CEO of the Samoa Rugby Union Faleomavaega Vincent Fepuleai encouraged the girls to follow their dreams.

“I want to say to all you young girls today, that anything the boys can do, you can do it, and do it better,” he said.
