Five killed in attack on US newspaper

Staff at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis said he shot through a glass door into the newsroom.

"There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you're under your desk and then hear the gunman reload," tweeted reporter Phil Davis.

Police said a suspect was now in custody and was being questioned.

"We've had a terrible shooting incident here this afternoon," county executive Steve Schuh said in a news conference.

"There are several people who have died from this incident."

A State Government spokesperson said the Beechcraft five-person charter flight to King Island crashed soon after take-off at 9am (11am NZ time).

The pilot called mayday as the plane was taking off. Victoria Police Superintendent Mick Frewen said it appeared to be affected by a "catastrophic engine failure".

The plane crashed into the back of two shops, Focus on Furniture and JB Hi Fi, he said.

A spokeswoman for the outlet's Spotlight store said part of that store's warehouse and dispatch area was also hit.
