9/11 anniversary: Emotional tributes paid to lives lost

Many struggled to hold back tears at the ceremony held at Ground Zero, the site of the Twin Towers destroyed in the attacks by al-Qaeda militants.

"Twenty years feels like an eternity, but it still feels like yesterday," cried Lisa Reina who lost her husband.

A minute's silence was held at the exact time each hijacked plane crashed.

George W Bush, who was the US president at the time, gave a speech in Pennsylvania, where one of the planes crashed into a field after passengers overpowered the hijackers.

They appear to have been taken by an as yet unidentified construction worker who helped to clear up the wreckage of the World Trade Center towers and surrounding area.

The CDs were in poor condition but the data was ultimately retrievable.

The archivists have uploaded the photos to Flickr.

The digital albums include images of Ground Zero itself taken both at ground level and from above, construction staff at work and the damaged interiors of the blocks surrounding the towers.

College students vandalize 9/11 memorial

The Occidental College Republican Club said it had planted 2,997 tiny flags -- one for each of the victims of the September 11, 2001, attacks -- on the quad of the Los Angeles liberal arts college of 2,100 students.

"Vandals crushed, snapped and threw in the garbage every single flag," the collegeĀ GOP club said on Facebook. "Not one was left in the ground."

Looking back at 9/11, Americans feel fear, anger, worry

They are more likely than five years ago to feel fear and anger when they think about what happened that day, according to a new CNN/ORC Poll.

Half of Americans say that acts of terrorism in the US in the days around September 11 this year are at least somewhat likely, up from 39% who felt that way around the 10th anniversary of the attacks in 2011.

But in both these cases the tactical success of the attacks was not matched by strategic victories. Quite the reverse.

The Japanese scored an important victory at Pearl Harbor, but the attack pulled the United States into World War II and four years later Japan was in ruins, utterly defeated.

Before returning to fictional stories after 9/11, 'Third Watch' honored real bravery

But on the day "Third Watch" executive producer Christopher Chulack saw him from the backseat of a NYPD police car as he drove up to Ground Zero -- escorted by dust-covered New York City police officer Mike Keenan at the wheel -- a fresh swarm of uniformed reservists had just descended upon the area.
