Serena uncertain for Australia

Williams was around two months pregnant when she captured her 23rd grand slam singles title in Melbourne earlier this year and was hoping to defend her crown next January following the birth of her daughter in September.

"Serena is getting ready for 2018," the 36-year-old American's coach Patrick Mouratoglou told CNN. "She is practising and getting back in shape. I will be joining her soon in Florida.

"We will see how her body is reacting and how her tennis level is and we will take a decision regarding Australia."

Australia same-sex marriage bill passes Senate hurdle

The upper house bill will now be debated in the House of Representatives, where if approved it will become law.

It follows a historic national vote that showed a majority of Australians support changing the Marriage Act.

Senators passed the bill 43-12 on Wednesday, after rejecting proposed amendments by conservative lawmakers.

Attorney-General George Brandis, the government's Senate leader, said the legislation would "demolish the last significant bastion of legal discrimination" concerning sexuality.

Kangaroos don't buy Bennett's mind games

Bennett made the statement after England’s narrow 20-18 semi-final win over Tonga but Kangaroos prop David Klemmer said those kind of mind games won’t engender any complacency in the Australian squad.

Klemmer insisted Bennett would instil belief in the England squad that they could upset the host nation.

Holmes scores six as Australia thumps Fiji

Holmes's stunning return came on the back of his five-try performance against Samoa last week, as the Kangaroos ran away with a 10-tries-to-one victory.

The Fijians started with intensity in the early exchanges and opened the scoring with a penalty goal in the second minute.

Jarryd Hayne was in the thick of it early with a big hit on Billy Slater but his team conceded too many penalties to stay in the contest.

China cautions Australia over sea policy

On Thursday, Australia raised concerns about the "pace and scale" of China's activities in the disputed zone - part of a wide-ranging document setting out Canberra's foreign engagement strategy.

Beijing said the paper was generally positive towards China, but Australia should not get involved in the dispute.

The Australian government played down the criticism on Friday.

In a briefing on Thursday, China's foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang noted that Australia had repeatedly pledged not to take sides over the South China Sea.

Australia to demolish and rebuild Sydney Olympics stadium

The move is part of an A$2.3bn (£1.3bn; $1.8bn) project in New South Wales.

The state government voted on Thursday in favour of the controversial decision, local media outlets reported, citing government sources.

The government has long planned to redesign the stadium to better suit the local sports played there, but critics say the project will waste money.

The plan was first floated in 2015 by the New South Wales government, and lawmakers have bitterly debated over it for months.

Tesla finishes installing mega-battery in Australia

The 100-megawatt battery in South Australia is designed to provide security to the state's electricity grid.

It will store enough energy to power 30,000 homes for about an hour.

Tesla's chief executive Elon Musk had said the battery would be free if it was not installed within 100 days of signing a contract for the project.

It appears the company will meet the 1 December deadline for installation of the battery array, which will be connected to a wind farm run by French renewable energy company Neoen.

UN urges Australia to solve Manus Island crisis

About 400 refugees are still refusing to leave the former detention centre on the Papua New Guinea island after it was closed at the end of October when essential services were cut.

The deputy regional representative of the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), Nai Jit Lam, said Australia remained responsible for the refugees and should engage them in constructive dialogue.

"This is a man-made and entirely preventable humanitarian crisis. It is a damning indictment of a policy meant to avoid Australia's international obligations," the UNHCR added.

Nasa tracking station in Australia hit by staff strike

The Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex is one of three Nasa sites globally that provide constant radio contact with more than 30 spacecraft.

About 60 workers will go on strike for an hour, forcing staff at a US station to work overtime.

Nasa said the dispute would not affect operations.

While funded by Nasa, the tracking station is managed by Australia's government science agency, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

Kangaroos target Fiji's 'Bill'

The 22-year-old Penrith powerhouse goes by the nickname “Bill” and Kangaroos forward Reagan Campbell-Gillard knows only too well the devastation he can cause after watching  him “terrorising people” in the Intrust Super Premiership this year.

Kikau stands at 195cm and weighs in at 119kg.
