History for Brazil football

Formiga, who made her Brazil debut at the 1995 World Cup as a 17-year-old, has played in every Olympic tournament since women's football made its debut at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

The Sao Paulo midfielder is looking to finish her career with an elusive gold medal having won the silver in 2004 and 2008, while the 2016 Games in Rio ended in heartbreak when the home team lost their semi-final and the bronze medal match.

Meanwhile team-mate Marta became the first woman footballer to score in five consecutive Olympic Games when she netted twice in their 5-0 win.

Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 to win Copa America

Brazil piled on the pressure in an exciting second half but even with five strikers on the field they could not get an equaliser against an Argentine defence protected by the outstanding Rodrigo De Paul.

President Jair Bolsonaro, who has frequently spoken out against lockdowns, masks and defended unproved drugs as treatment, is facing widespread criticism and his support has plummeted.

New Christ statue in Brazil's Encantado to be taller than Rio's

Christ the Protector in the southern city of Encantado will be 43m (140 ft) high with its pedestal, making it the world's third tallest Jesus statue.

A head and outstretched arms were added to the structure last week, which was begun in 2019.

The idea came from local politician Adroaldo Conzatti, who died in March with Covid-19.

The $350,000 (£255,000) project is expected to be completed later in the year, the Association of the Friends of Christ group which is organising it says.
