Samoa to be represented in first ever Commonwealth Games swimming semifinal

Borg qualified in the 50m butterfly event after clocking a time of 0:27:42.

She set a new national record for Samoa in the semifinal after clocking a time of 0:27:37.

The Samoan swimmer also finished first in her 100m butterfly heat with a time of 57:53 seconds. Despite her best efforts, she was not able to advance to her second semi-final.

Borg has set a new national record in all four of her events at the Commonwealth Games – the 50m Butterfly, 100m Butterfly, 4x100m Mixed Medley Relay and the Freestyle Relay.

 

     

Pacific countries stamp their mark at the Commonwealth Games

Leading the region and the overall medal tally is Australia with 31 gold, 20 silver and 20 bronze medals.

New Zealand is in third place with 13 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronze medals.

Fiji is currently in 17th place with 2 silver medals.

Both in 20th place with 1 silver medal each are Papua New Guinea and Samoa.

72 countries are now heading into the sixth day of competitions.

     

Samoa 7s finishes in fifth place at the Commonwealth Games

The side won the semifinal over the tough Canadian team 19-17, this morning.

The side bowed out of the medal contention after going down to Australia 7-0 in the quarterfinals.

The Brian Lima coached side was remarkable from the beginning of the campaign in the sport after defeating host nation England 34-0 in their opening game.

The men in blue went also defeated Sri Lanka 44-0 after losing to New Zealand 19-17.

     

Faoagali secures a win in his first fight in Birmingham

The 23-year-old won against Sanjeet Sanjeet of India in the Men’s over 86kg-92kg Heavyweight division.

Being defensive in the last two rounds cost reigning Asian Champion, Sanjeet dearly as Faogali came from behind to take the fixture 3-2.

After attacking in the first round, which he won by a unanimous decision, Sanjeet slipped into defensive mode to allow Faoagali Claw his way back in the contest.

Sanjeet was on the backfoot in the second round as Faoagali landed a few punches. He continued the onslaught in the third round.

     

Fiji 7s and Fijiana settle for Silver medal in Birmingham

Fiji’s wait for a gold medal in 7s continues.

Blitzbok raced to an early lead and pressured the national side to making many unforced errors.

Muller Du Plessis ran in two tries to help his side.

The other tries were scored by JC Pretorious and Shaun Williams as they led 17-0 at half time.

Skipper Waisea Nacuqu scored the lone try for Fiji in the second spell but it wasn’t enough as South Africa proved too strong in defense.

“It is a Samoan magic necklace, which we use for good luck and friendship. Jeremy is my friend and I thought to put in across his neck to wish him luck," the Samoan weightlifter said later as the participants left the venue, with broad smiles on their faces and medals across their necks.

Dika Toua hopeful of snatching Games medal for PNG

Toua will be in action at the Games in the women's 53kg category at the NEC Arena in Birmingham, England.

Weightlifting will begin its competition on Saturday local time.

"My aim is to do my best and hopefully win a medal, that is the number one priority going into this competition," Toua, who win silver in 2018, told the Post Courier.

"Whether I win a silver or a gold medal, it doesn't matter, the biggest thing is winning and making my family and the nation proud of my achievement."

Manu Samoa kickstart country's Commonwealth Games campaign

The sevens head coach is Brian Lima with Melani Matavao, Vaafauese Apelu Maliko and Afa Su'a all co-captains.

Besides rugby sevens, Team Samoa will also kick off their campaign in aquatic swimming, boxing and weightlifting between Friday night and Saturday night, Samoa time.

Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (SASNOC) President Pauga Talalelei Pauga said Team Samoa and officials arrived safely in Birmingham after three days of travelling.

"Thanks to God for everything," Pauga said.

Team Samoa settling well in Birmingham

Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee President Pauga Talalelei Pauga said, “Thanks to God for everything. Team Samoa has settled in well after having to go through Covid-19 testing and accreditation.’

“While in a foreign country, Team Samoa continues to give praise to the Lord through their evening devotionals.”

Pauga added that the Samoan athletes are now in training while they wait for the official opening of the Commonwealth Games tomorrow. (Samoa Time). 

Commonwealth Games 2022: Helen Housby celebrates rise of women's sport

An understandable role model for an avid Manchester United fan, but the choice was partly out of necessity.

Housby did not see many sportswomen on screen or in the newspapers when she was a child.

But things have changed since then.

Four years ago, Housby became an icon for young netballers everywhere with a last-second goal to take a historic Commonwealth netball gold for England.

Later this month, England will bid to defend that title on home soil at the first Commonwealth Games with more medal events for women than men.
