Cyclone Wasi

Residents stranded after Cyclone Wasi floods rivers in Samoa

Although there were no casualties or major building damage reported due to the cyclone, some rivers and roads remained flooded.

The Samoa Observer reported two rivers on Savai'i, Mali'oli'o River and Sasina Fiord rose to dangerously high levels and have cut off road access.

Residents from Letui and Aopo - who attended a church gathering at Faletagaloa Safune on Sunday - were stranded and unable to travel home because the water at Sasina Fiord was so high after the heavy rain.

The public have been warned the heavy rain associated with the category one storm could bring flooding and landslides to the country.

The system is travelling southeast at 17 kmph and is forecast to pass over or near Niue tomorrow afternoon.

Niue remains under a Cyclone Warning with wind gusts of up to 100 kmph expected by tonight.

Cyclone Wasi the latest to hit Samoa

It is the second cyclone in two days to have formed in the same area.

At noon today category one Wasi was located to the northwest of Apia and moving southeast.

Wasi is expected to pass Samoa, intensifying to a category two storm as it moves to the southeast towards Niue.

It is not expected in Niue's waters under late on Sunday.

That island is still feeling the effects of now ex-cyclone Vicky, which was downgraded by forecasters this morning, and has moved to the south of Niue.
