Samoan female weightlifter breaks three Oceania records

The Samoa Observer reported that Feagaiga Stowers lifted 121kg in the snatch and 155kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 276kg, setting three new records for the region.

In July, Stowers will defend her Commonwealth women's over 90kg division title, which she won at the 2018 Gold Coast games.

President of the Samoa Weightlifting Federation, Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork, said it was a fantastic performance by Feagaiga and that she is on the right path to win gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Stowers lifts another gold for Samoa

Feagaiga lifted 124kg a personal best in the Snatch to edge out the 2018 World Champion, Sion Mi Lee from Korea.

Lesila Fiapule finished in 5th place in the same category.

Feagaiga’s gold medal finished off the championship on a high note for the Samoan weightlifters.

Earlier this week, Don Opeloge set a world record and snatched two gold medals at the championships.

The event ended in Suva today.

Samoan teenager wins weightlifting gold after transgender athlete's withdrawal

Stowers trailed leader Hubbard by 7kg after the snatch, but she went onto claim gold after her New Zealand rival pulled out of the competition with an injured left elbow.

New Zealand's Hubbard, the first transgender athlete to compete at the Commonwealth Games, was expected to win the event easily.

She withdrew after hurting her arm on her final snatch, which saw her miss her attempt at a Commonwealth record of 132kg and twist her elbow as she dropped the bar behind her.
