Former Samoa rugby sevens coach to pay hefty surety

The former head coach is suing the Samoa Rugby Union and its chief executive for substantial damages over the termination of his contract more than two years ago.

Mr McGrath's lawyer had appealed on the ground that in the fixing of the security amount the judge erred by failing to consider whether the amounts of security denied the plaintiff full access to justice.

 

     

Damian McGrath says he will miss Samoa

RNZ reports the Englishman has been appointed head coach of the Canada men's sevens team, a month after being sacked by the Samoa Rugby Union.

He led Samoa to a ninth place finish during the World Series but they failed to qualify for the Rio Olympics.

McGrath said the past month has been a rollercoaster of emotions.

"From the shock of the dismissal and the upheaval and the legal issues that transpired in between and it's been a great weight off my shoulders to get the Canada job and I'm really looking forward to that," he said.

The Englishman, who led Samoa to a ninth place finish in the 2015/16 World Sevens Series, has broken his silence on his dumping, saying he can no longer let attempts to defame his character go unchallenged.

But, in a statement released over the weekend, Damian McGrath said despite numerous attempts to the contact the Samoa Rugby Union he still has not been given a reason why he was sacked.
