UK phone firms demand clarity over Huawei

 In a draft letter to Cabinet Secretary Mark Sedwill, seen by the BBC, operators will urge the government to clarify its position over Huawei.

The letter asks for an urgent meeting between industry leaders and the government to discuss their concerns.

Operators say they can't invest in infrastructure while uncertainty over the use of Chinese technology persists.

The companies are planning to send the letter to government as soon as this week.

Facebook stops apps being pre-installed on Huawei phones

The ban covers the main Facebook app, as well as apps from its subsidiary companies WhatsApp and Instagram.

The action was taken in response to US government action in May to bar US companies from using foreign telecom firms it regards as a security risk.

People who already own a Huawei phone and have the relevant apps installed can still continue to use them.

Facebook said they would also continue to supply updates to existing users on Huawei phones.

Huawei has not commented on the Facebook decision.

Huawei welcome to bid for 5G in Samoa - regulator

Australia and New Zealand have blocked Huawei from building 5G networks, while British telecoms giant BT Group will strip the company from core networks.

Japanese media are today reporting that Japan will follow the United States in banning government purchases of Huawei gear.

Regulator Lefaoali'i Unutoa Auelua-Fonoti said she was satisfied with the checks Digicel and Bluesky have done in Samoa.

She said no governments had directly raised issues with Samoa.

The Company in a statement denounce the allegations stating that they have never never given, implied, nor promised any political donations in relation to this project.

“As a global business entity, Huawei does not involve itself in politics.

“Huawei forbids all of its global subsidiaries from making any form of political donation, including in places where this practice is legal.

“Cyber security remains a top priority at Huawei,’’ said Brent Hooley, Huawei Australia’s Media Relations officer.

Huawei defeats Samsung in patent battle in China

A Chinese court in Quanzhou has ordered the Galaxy S8-maker to pay 80m yuan ($11.6m; £9.3m) to Huawei for infringing the firm's smartphone cellular technologies.

The two are also suing each other over patents in other courts.

Huawei's victory was tempered, however, by news that it could face a sales ban in the UK.

Huawei launched the legal action against Samsung last May and has subsequently followed with other claims filed in its home city of Shenzhen and California, covering more than 10 patents.

Huawei opening datacentre, expanding research labs in New Zealand

Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei met with Prime Minister Bill English this week to discuss the company's expansion across New Zealand, with Ren saying Huawei is interested by the country's attitudes towards trade, as well as the opportunities for Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity

"New Zealand's open and fair trade environment, and its emphasis on developing new technology, facilitates our ongoing commitment," Ren said.

Huawei sees revenues surge in the first half of 2016

The firm reported 245.5bn yuan ($37bn, £28bn) in revenues, up from 175.6bn yuan for the same period last year.

It did not disclose its net profit but said the operating margin was 12%, down from 18% in the first half of 2015.

Huawei is the third-biggest smartphone vendor in the world behind Samsung and Apple and one of the world's largest telecommunications firms.

Originally known for its low-cost smartphones, Huawei has now moved into higher-end models.

The company said it had seen steady growth across all its business sectors.
