Samoa nurses plead not guilty over baby deaths

The two accused, Leutogi Te'o and Luse Emo Tuavale, entered a not guilty plea to manslaughter, conspiracy to defeat the course of justice and negligence.

The women remain on bail for a hearing set down for January next year.

The one year old infants died in July soon after receiving a vaccination for measles, mumps and rubella at a clinic in Savai'i.

A Commission of Inquiry into their deaths is set to start next Monday.

Samoa babies who died after vaccine to be returned to families

The childrens' deaths soon after receiving the common MMR vaccine prompted the government to temporarily call off vaccination programmes.

Lemalu Herman Retzlaff says post-mortems have been conducted, and a forensic pathology team from Australia is helping to establish why they died.

A separate police investigation is continuing.

Meanwhile, the health ministry has taken issue with some local and media speculation, saying it risks undermining the national immunisation programme.

Woman guilty of hiding six dead infants in locker

Andrea Giesbrecht had been charged with six counts of concealing the body of a child. Each charge carries a sentence of up to two years in jail.

Manitoba provincial court Judge Murray Thompson read out his decision on Monday after a months-long trial.

The remains of the infants were found in the locker in October 2014.

Judge Thompson said the evidence presented at trial left "no doubt" that Ms Giesbrecht concealed her pregnancies and the resulting delivery of the six infants.
