Joseph Parker

Samoan heavyweight boxer inspired by Joseph Parker

Masoe will fight at Commonwealth Games level for the first time on the Gold Coast in the coming days.

Having narrowly missed selection in the New Zealand team, he was offered the chance to fight for the land where his parents were born.

Like Parker, who at the weekend lost his world heavyweight title to Britain's Anthony Joshua, 22-year-old Masoe is a proud Kiwi-Samoan, and says he has been inspired by his more famous countryman's efforts on the global stage.

Joshua vs Parker: Anthony Joshua completes wide points win over Joseph Parker in Cardiff

The British heavyweight star added the WBO belt to his IBF and WBA 'super' titles as he produced a disciplined display against the rugged Parker to earn a wide unanimous decision with scores of 118-110, 118-110 and 119-109 at the Principality Stadium.

Joshua's perfect run of 20 knockouts was ended by Parker, who retained his reputation for toughness, but AJ moved one belt away from becoming the undisputed champion.

Joshua beats Parker in Cardiff

Parker pledged to outwork, outbox and outlast Joshua, no doubt garnering encouragement from his opponent's workmanlike showing against Carlos Takam last time out, but it was the 28-year-old Briton who decisively banked rounds down the closing stretch, with his opponent never able to crack the puzzle presented to him by a spearing left jab.

Parker weighs in 3 kilos lighter than Joshua

Introduced to the stage by a combined Samoan and Maori cultural performance, Parker tipped the scales at 107.3kg in front of a crowd of around 4000 fight fans.

The weight represented a loss of nearly 5kg from his last title defence against Englishman Hughie Fury in September.

Joshua's weight had been a significant talking point in the build-up and, as expected, he came in much lighter than he had been for his most recent fight.

The countdown begins to Parker vs Joshua

In every possible way, the 26-year-old boxer from the south Auckland suburb of Mangere is ready to dance and defy the odds in a world heavyweight title unification bout with British superstar Anthony Joshua.

As fit and fast as ever, mentally locked in and, perhaps most importantly, in a composed, confident and relaxed state of mind.

In the words of Parker himself, no stone has been left unturned in pursuit of what bookmakers are suggesting would be a huge upset victory against a powerful and physically imposing opponent.

Profiling Joseph Parker

The New Zealander meets fellow undefeated fighter Anthony Joshua in a unification contest full of intrigue. The only certainty, it seems, is that someone's '0' will have to go.

While Joshua has made waves on both sides of the Atlantic in his career to date, Parker has barely made much of a ripple outside his homeland. However, he poses a serious threat to the Briton's plans to clean up the division.

But how much do you know about the WBO champion? Here we take a look back at his career to date ahead of the big fight in Cardiff.

Anthony Joshua v Joseph Parker fight will make 'history' in Cardiff

WBA and IBF world heavyweight champion Joshua meets WBO title-holder Parker at Cardiff's Principality Stadium.

It will be Briton Joshua's fourth stadium bout but, with 80,000 fans expected, represents a new level of interest for New Zealand's Parker.

"It took me a few times to get used to it," Joshua told BBC Radio 5 live.

"It's an experience he hasn't faced yet. It is daunting, it is overwhelming.

Parker wants to make NZ, Samoa proud in unification heavyweight fight

Unbeaten champions Parker and Joshua will unify their WBO, WBA, IBF and IBO belts next weekend at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

The 26-year-old Parker knows he is the underdog heading into the biggest fight of 2018, but speaking to reporters at his first press conference since arriving in the UK, the Kiwi is motivated by the fact he thinks "the public are underestimating my team and me".

"They're basing it on my last three fights and see Joshua as unbeatable but I have an element of surprise," he added.

Anthony Joshua reveals the thought of losing to Joseph Parker scares him

Unbeaten champions Joshua and Parker will unify their WBA, IBF, IBO and WBO belts on April 1 (NZ time) at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

Joshua says one defeat should not define a fighter, but every unbeaten boxer still goes into the ring with the fear of losing.

Speaking to Sky Sports UK eight days out from the highly anticipated fight, Joshua said he is focused on the bout and is open to what a potential loss could mean for his career.

Parker continues to inspire next boxing generation

There's a certain symmetry to the fact the biggest opportunity of Mose Auimatagi Junior's career will come when he fights on the undercard of Joseph Parker's title unification bout against British superstar Anthony Joshua in Cardiff on Easter Sunday.

Now 22 and the New Zealand champion in the middleweight division, Auimatagi Junior was just 14 when he walked in the door at the Papatoetoe Boxing Club.

By then Parker was a Youth Olympic Games silver medallist, and all the attention he was getting served as motivation for a younger boy from the same neck of the woods.
