The Matrix 4: Trailer gives first taste of Keanu Reeves' sci-fi comeback

The Matrix Resurrections will be released in cinemas and on the HBO Max streaming service in December.

The original Matrix movie came out in 1999, and the first two sequels were both released in 2003.

The series involves a virtual reality constructed by a futuristic artificial intelligence to enslave humankind.

Returning co-star Carrie-Anne Moss can also be seen in the trailer, which had its online premiere on Thursday.

Here are five things we took away from the first look at what is already one of the year's most eagerly-awaited blockbusters.

Would you pay to Zoom Keanu Reeves or Star Trek's Riker?

Reeves is auctioning a 15-minute Zoom call for a children's cancer charity.

The highest bid at time of writing is $9,800 (£7,800).

Meanwhile, on the celebrity message platform Cameo, £166 will buy a 10-minute Zoom call with Star Trek actor Jonathan Frakes or skateboarder Tony Hawk.

Cameo said there had been "a tonne of interest" in its Zoom service, Cameo Live, despite just 31 celebrities - only four of whom are women - signing up since launch, on Sunday.

Keanu Reeves to star in The Matrix 4

Carrie-Anne Moss will also return as Trinity, with Lana Wachowski coming back as director and co-writer after creating the franchise with her sister Lilly.

"Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now," Wachowski said in a statement published by Variety.

"I'm very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends."

Lana wrote the new film's script along with sci-fi novelists Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell.

Keanu Reeves drops in on Xbox E3 event

The movie actor announced that Cyberpunk 2077 is set to go on sale on 16 April 2020.

The future-set role-playing game is being developed by CD Projekt Red, the studio behind the Witcher series.

Reeves - who has starred in the Matrix trilogy amongst other sci-fi movies - will appear in the title.

His brief appearance at the Xbox event drew huge applause with one attendee shouting: "You're breathtaking."

"No, you're breathtaking," the actor ad-libbed in reply.
