"I've got a lot to think about, to be honest," said James, repeating the sentence twice. "Just for me personally going forward with the game of basketball, I've got a lot to think about."

James collected 40 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in Game 4 but missed a turnaround jumper and had a layup blocked with a chance to tie the game on each of the final two possessions of the 113-111 loss to the Denver Nuggets.

He scored 26 points to take his career tally to 44,157, surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's 44,149.

However, James missed a last-second free throw that would have won the game for the Lakers in San Francisco.

Klay Thompson scored a season-high 33 points for the Warriors.

With 36,526 points, James remains behind Abdul-Jabbar (38,387) and Karl Malone (36,928) on the regular-season points list.

Malik Monk weighed in with 29 points and Anthony Davis 28 for the Lakers.

Monk scored 18 in the third quarter as the Lakers came from 71-56 down at half-time in LA.

RJ Barrett scored a career-high 36 points for the Knicks but could not prevent a fifth loss in six games.

James added 11 rebounds and 11 assists to record his third triple-double of the season in a 132-123 win in LA.

Russell Westbrook finished with a triple-double of 24 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, while Malik Monk scored 25 points and Carmelo Anthony 24.

Jalen Green responded with 24 points as the Rockets lost a fifth straight game.

James, who this month became the fifth player in NBA history to record 100 triple-doubles, started at centre for the first time in his career.

James became the fifth player in NBA history to reach the milestone after scoring 20 points with 10 rebounds and 11 assists in the defeat.

"Turnovers killed us," said James.

"We were doing a hell of a job over the last seven games averaging only 12.5 turnovers. Tonight we had 22 for 27 points."

The Grizzlies were without key players Ja Morant and Dillon Brooks but still won, with Jaren Jackson Jr scoring 25 points and Desmond Bane adding 23.

NBA returning after short turnaround

Just 72 days after clinching their 17th championship, the Lakers host city rivals the Los Angeles Clippers in the second game of the new season.

"It's been a different training camp, to say the least, but for the time we've had, which hasn't been that much, I feel like we've put in the work and gotten better," Lakers forward LeBron James said.

"Obviously, we're not where we want to be long-term but that's absolutely OK because it's a long season, it's a long journey. But to the credit of the guys, we've gotten better as the days have gone on."

James, who turns 36 later this month, led the Lakers to their first title in a decade in October having previously won two championships with the Miami Heat and one with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Lakers are favourites to again win the title in the upcoming season which tips off later this month.

It makes him only the sixth man in NBA Finals history to record a triple-double, joining LeBron James (x2), James Worthy and Jerry West. And makes him only the third player in NBA Finals history to record a 40-point triple-double, joining James and West.

James scored 33 points and Anthony Davis contributed 32, as the Lakers wore 'Black Mamba' uniforms in honour of Lakers legend Bryant.

The Lakers are now two wins away from their first NBA title since 2010.

Game three will take place in the NBA bubble on Sunday (Monday 00:30 BST).

Bryant and his daughter Gianna were among nine people killed in a helicopter crash in January.

Anthony Davis scored 34 points for the Lakers, with James adding 25 points and nine assists.

Jimmy Butler had 23 points for the Heat, who lost point guard Goran Dragic and forward Bam Adebayo to injury.

James said: "The job is not done. We're not satisfied winning one game."

Speaking after Thursday's game, he added: "You have to get a feel for how hard Miami plays. We got a sense for that. We got more work to do. It's that simple."
