Samoa’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment offers student sponsorship

The sponsorship will be available after the Ministry signed a Memorandum of Understanding to formalise its partnership with the National University of Samoa.

MNRE Chief Executive, Frances Brown Reupena said the MoU provides a platform for targeted higher learning on mitigation strategies that are viable for Samoa.

“Students will learn of energy systems and services, and energy solutions for residential, commercial, and industrial premises,” she said.

Samoa styrofoam ban kicks in this week

That is when a nationwide ban on the products will come into effect and businesses who continue to use or sell Styrofoam plates, containers and cups are likely to face up to $US3700 fines or a six month prison term.

Individuals can be fined up to $US1850 or face up to six months in prison according to an online campaign conducted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

The ministry warns that spot checks will start after 30 June.

The ban also extends to anyone planning to export Styrofoam products from Samoa.

Malielegaoi was adamant on his remarks towards the efforts by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in combating climate change.

“In celebrating National Environment week, we should all take part in the action taken. For years the government has been singing the same song of warning and advisory, to take care of the environment,” he said.

“Your actions today will ensure a better future for your children and grandchildren. It will ensure a future at least,” he said.
