Samoa and Tonga reach tennis men's doubles semis

In the men’s doubles quarter finals, Tongan brothers Matavano and Semisi Fanguna upset second seeds, PNG’s Mark Gibbons and Matthew Stubbings, to progress to the semi-finals. An excited Matavano Fanguna said: ”This win means a lot. It’s our second Pacific Games but our first time to progress to the semis”.

Samoan resort the final resting place for US actress

Haynes, who died in Florida in April at the age of 91, was in the 1953 Hollywood movie 'Return to Paradise' opposite Gary Cooper.

Her ashes are being interred at a chapel at the Return to Paradise resort.

Haynes' son, Jonathan Ward, brought his mother's ashes to Samoa and was welcomed by staff and management of the resort yesterday.

He says his mother had many fond memories of Samoa and its people.

New web-based tax system rolled out in Samoa

The revenue minister said it will enable the real-time capture and monitoring of sales, notifying the revenue office how much tax should be collected.

Tialavea Tionisio Hunt told parliament the programme will start in January.

He also said a new x-ray scanner for cargo at Apia's main wharf is due to arrive next year.

Fiji to meet Samoa again for 13th-place play-off

They will now face Samoa again- who are now the leaders of Group E heading into day six.

Samoa had earlier defeated Fiji 55-54.

Fiji’s Goal Shooter Lydia Panapasa, who played a crucial role in Fiji’s win against Singapore, was injured during this match.

Both the 13th-place game – involving Fiji and Samoa – and the 15th-place game between Sri Lanka and Singapore, will take place on Friday night.

     

Samoa's Attorney General tags onto cryptocurrency probe

The Central Bank launched a probe into OneCoin in April after New Zealand police warned Samoan businesses and churches had invested.

OneCoin is banned in Samoa and has been labelled by authorities as a fradulent pyramid scheme, which the company denies.

Assistant Attorney General Sefo Junior Ainuu said his office is continuing to review an intelligence report from New Zealand police.

The Samoa Observer reports it was referred to Mr Ainuu after the Attorney General, Lemalu Hermann Retzlaff, declared a conflict of interest.

Dodson rates debut race on Samoan soil as best experience ever

The 31 year-old was born and raised in the United States but qualifies for Samoa through his mother, who is from the village of Malie.

Dodson first represented Samoa four years ago but said to compete in Samoa in front of a Samoan crowd was an incredible experience.

Samoa beat Fiji by one point at the Netball World Cup

  The Fiji Pearls was beaten 85‑29 in their opening match against Jamaica.

They were also hammered 90‑35 by South Africa and also lost to Trinidad and Tobago 67-56.

According to the International Netball Federation rankings, the Fiji Pearls are currently ranked 17th in the world.

The Fiji Pearls will now face Singapore at 8pm tomorrow in the 13th - 16th playoffs.

   

PNG debutant eyes gold in men’s decathlon

Neither rain nor clouds could dampen the mood of the July 15th afternoon.

The decathlon got underway at Apia Park Stadium with the 100m sprint followed by long jump, shot put, high jump and the 400m under the shadow of the Pacific Games torch blazing through the gloomy sky.

Iga, whose forte is the pole vault, one of the five remaining events of the men’s decathlon, currently sits at second place on the results table in his bid for a medal.

England thrash Samoa after tears shed for Guscoth

Guscoth, who suffered a ruptured achilles against Scotland on Saturday which has ruled her out of the rest of the tournament, watched from the bench as her teammates ended the preliminary phase with a processional 90-24 win that booked England’s place in the second group stage.

Neville admitted the loss of the popular Guscoth had hit the team hard, saying: “Of course there were tears from everyone. There was nothing wrong with showing emotion because she means a lot to us.

Manslaughter sentence of MMR nurses in Samoa again delayed

The pair pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges last month and were initially due to be sentenced in June.

The delays are causing further distress to the families of the two dead babies according to TV1 Samoa because of ongoing time and costs imposed for travel from Savaii to Apia for the sentencing.

The Samoa Observer reports Acting Chief Justice Vui Clarence Nelson on Friday adjourned the case until 2 August as the defence lawyer was engaged in another matter.
