Samoa and Fiji U20s set up all-Pacific final

The Baby Manu recovered from a half-time deficit to overcome previously unbeaten Namibia 41-28 in Bucharest on to finish top of Pool A with three straight wins.

Fiji, meanwhile, maintained their perfect record in Pool B after scoring eight second half tries to seal a come from behind 53-26 victory over Canada.

The Baby Flying Fijians also trailed at half-time, and didn't take the lead until the 67th minute, but scored seven tries in the final 25 minutes to keep their promotion hopes alive.

Former Samoa sevens coach appeals surety ruling

Mr McGrath is suing the Union and its chief executive, Faleomavaega Vincent Fepulea'i, for US$400,000 dollars, for terminating his contract in 2016.

The plaintiff's lawyer said the case would go ahead after a mediation between the parties had not been successful.

But the defendants had been successful with an application for the plaintiff to first make a surety payment of about US$14,000, before the hearing goes ahead.

 

     

Warning issued over misuse of drones in Samoa

Residents of Faga village on Savai'i have complained on several occasions about drones hovering near their bedrooms.

Villagers directed their criticism at the Amoa Resort, whose general manager, Paul Cafarelli, said action has been taken.

He said the resort doesn't want to invade people's privacy and it has put restrictions on how drones can be operated from the resort.

The police commissioner, Fuiavailili Egon Keil has warned against "illegal practices" in response to the concerns.

 

     

Samoans now eligible for Australia's Pacific Labour Scheme

The Pacific Labour Scheme commenced on 1 July 2018 to help meet business demand in rural and regional Australia, where it is clear no Australians are available to work.

Samoans will now be able to join workers from Kiribati, Nauru, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu in the scheme thanks to an agreement signed by Samoa's Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi with Australia's new Minister of Foreign Affairs Marise Payne in Nauru yesterday.

Samoa Commission of Inquiry into babies’ death to begin next week

The hearings will take place at the TATTE Convention Centre from Monday until Wednesday.

The other two members of the Commission of Inquiry are Leo’o Dr John Adams and Lealaiauloto Liai Iosefa-Siitia.

Mailata makes the cut for Super Bowl champs

Samoa nurses plead not guilty over baby deaths

The two accused, Leutogi Te'o and Luse Emo Tuavale, entered a not guilty plea to manslaughter, conspiracy to defeat the course of justice and negligence.

The women remain on bail for a hearing set down for January next year.

The one year old infants died in July soon after receiving a vaccination for measles, mumps and rubella at a clinic in Savai'i.

A Commission of Inquiry into their deaths is set to start next Monday.

Former Samoa minister and businessman dies

Mr Keil, who sold his commercial television station earlier this year, had been ill for the past few months.

He had been a supporter of the ruling HRPP party for many years after his late father had been given approval by the previous government of Tofilau Eti Alesana, to operate the first official lottery game in Samoa.

The lottery games are now run and operated by the government.

The funeral service is expected to be held next week.

     

Doubt over silver medallist's eligibility for Samoa

The Australian-based and born boxer holds a Samoan passport through which he represented the islands at last year's Gold Coast Games.

The Pacific Games Council has told RNZ Pacific the eligibility requirements for its flagship event included a passport as well as five years of residence.

Faoagali who lives with his family in New South Wales, became a local hero when he emerged as a relative unknown to win the Commonwealth Games silver medal in the men's 81kg division.

Sallies begin abuse and addiction services in Samoa

A church and addiction treatment centre will be set up.

Another focus will be addressing violence against women and children.

The church was first approached in 1984, but finally decided to go, after being asked last year by Samoa's Prime Minister, Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi.

Tuila'epa cited ongoing problems with drug addictions and alcohol abuse.

The Salvation Army's head of social services, Colonel Melvin Fincham, said they were starting their operations with three church staff in Apia.
