Samoa's Malietoa to be sentenced next month

Fa'amausili Moli Malietoa was also found guilty by a district court judge of uttering insults and object throwing.

Fa'amausili is the son of Malietoa Tanumafili II.

The Samoa Observer reported the verdict followed a trial held earlier this year and the charges relate to a family dispute.

Fa'amausili originally faced four charges, but the charge of assault was dismissed.

Sentencing for the matter has been scheduled for 24 May.

Last December the Land and Titles Court ruled in favour of Fa'amausili getting the Malietoa title.

Samoa knife attacker jailed for nine years

He had been charged with attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm.

The Samoa Observer reported that the man had attacked the woman as she was heading into her office in central Apia.

When members of the public tried to intervene the man ran off and tried to kill himself under a bridge.

Both were admitted to hospital with serious injuries.

 

     

Samoa Liquor Board inspects Savaii businesses

Other irregularities that were revealed include businesses failing to inform the relevant ministry that they do not sell liquor anymore and some businesses not renewing their licenses.

The inspection team also found that some businesses have closed down but have not notified the Ministry to cancel their licenses.

The inspection started in Salelologa last Thursday and has since ended.

A statement said the findings were addressed at a board meeting chaired by Minister for Revenue Tialavea Tionisio Hunt.

USP Alafua staff, students promote health and wellness

Ms Ronna Lee, Alafua’s Student Welfare Officer (SWO) said the main Zumba instructor is Ms Eterei Maiava, who undertakes the programme at Samoa Performing Arts & Creative Excellence (SPACE), a dance studio established by the late Allan Alo.

SPACE is a Dance studio that was established by the late Seiuli Allan Alo, the Pacific Outreach Coordinator for Polynesia to provide a platform to nurture and explore the development of dance, music, art, mixed media, literary arts and more.  It is the first ever professional dance/performance studio in Samoa.

Talofa Airways flights suspended

The Samoa Civil Aviation Authority suspended flights by the Apia-based company after yesterday's incident.

An airline spokesperson said brake pads overheated after landing and there was smoke.

The spokesperson said passengers were evacuated safely to the terminal and transported to Fagalii Airport.

Passengers were accommodated on Samoa Airways to American Samoa.

The Civil Aviation Authority has suspended services until an expert from NZ arrives to investigate the incident.

 

     

Samoan man busted for drugs lives in Alaska

They told TV1Samoa that the unnamed man had travelled to Samoa for a family funeral.

A joint Customs and Police dog unit discovered 26.6 grams of the banned drug said to be worth $US26,000 on the streets.

The accused was questioned, arrested and charged with possession soon after he arrived on a Fiji Airways flight from Nadi.

He is now in Police custody awaiting his first court appearance April 30.

     

Samoa CEO denies releasing court files to senior govt official

The executive officer, Papalii John Taimalelagi Afele, said he would never make such a decision because he does not want to be involved in an unlawful and criminal action, after the files were reportedly released to a government official.

Papalii denied he gave approval for the taking out of files from the ministry's main office at Mulinuu.

He said there was a procedure where members of the public who have cases in the Lands and Titles court will come and fill the forms before a decision on whether or not to allow access to the files.

     

Samoa's Alafua Campus cohort graduates from Cisco Academy

In his keynote address, Professor Mohammed Umar, Head of the School of Agriculture & Food Technology (SAFT) and acting Campus Director, said the first USP Alafua Cisco cohort started in 2011 comprising 25 students who were largely Information Communication Technology (ICT) engineers, Information Technology (IT) managers, systems and network administrators and technicians from local internet service providers and various computer companies including government ministries and corporations.

Samoan village helps apprehend road block suspects

The youths were apprehended by the village council.

Two of the suspects were taken to police on Monday after a council meeting to discuss last Thursday's roadblock - the second in the village.

During the latest roadblock a toilet bowl was put in the middle of the road with sand bags lining each side.

A police spokesperson, Auapa'au Logoitino Filipo, said the two suspects had revealed another person was involved during questioning and that person was also arrested.

Samoan police warn travelers after roadblocks

Last month, police were injured while trying to clear a blockade formed by village youth on the road to the east of the capital of Apia.

Police told the Samoa Observer that they received calls last week from travellers concerned at a new roadblock at Luatuanu'u.

A toilet bowl was reportedly placed in the middle of the road along with rocks.

Officers were sent to the scene where they were told by a local spokesperson that the village would handle the matter, the police said.

The unknown suspects had fled the scene after removing the makeshift roadblock.
