Call for better waste management and recycling in Samoa

A spokesperson for the Samoa Recycling Waste Management Association, Marina Keil says Samoa does not practice recycling despite an increase in plastic waste polluting roadsides, river sides and beaches.

She says plastic bags and drink bottles in particular are negatively impacting Samoa's natural environment.

Chronic prison escapes affecting constituents - Samoan MP

There has been a spate of escapes recently, prompting prisoners' weekend privileges to be revoked and a call from the prime minister for management to lift their performance as well as improve the fitness of staff.

Faleata West MP, Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi, said people living in nearby areas were often terrorised by escapees.

He said something needed to be done to end his constituents suffering.

Burnt school receives donation from Samoan residing in Utah

The donation is a gift from Faalogo Situtuila Sissy Vaa Vuki, a Samoan-born and now a resident of St George Utah, USA.

Upon hearing the tragic news that Palalaua College was gutted, Faalogo who has been silently making donations to education developments in Samoa for the last ten years, quickly put together whatever funds she can raise for her village school.

And it’s to honor the memory of her late father Tuatagaloa Te'o Fuimaono Fa'alogo Tupuola Asuao Vaa.

Samoa questions American Samoa's continued taro ban

The chief executive of Samoa's Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries said the taro virus that caused the ban has been found in crops from American Samoa.

Tilafono David Hunter said the ministry had a copy of test results from Hawai'i on the American Samoa taro which proved they had the same virus.

The two Samoas held talks in Apia last December and it was agreed a decision on lifting the ban would be made by March this year.

PNG-owned Taumeasina Island Resort tops Samoa award

The awards are given by the Samoa Tourism Authority celebrating the outstanding performances of those who have made exceptional contributions to Samoa’s tourism industry within the past 12 months.

The multi-million dollar Taumeasina Island Resort is owned by three PNG joint venture partners, the Lamana Group, Petroleum Resources Gobe and Mineral Resources Development Company.

Samoa MP warns of black market turkey tails

The MP for Faleata West, Leala'ilepule Rimoni Aiafi, raised concerns over the lifting of a ban on importing turkey tail meat for personal consumption.

Leala'ilepule said the ban had resulted in reports of turkey tails being sold in the black market.

The sale of turkey tails is banned in Samoa because of the food's contribution to non-communicable and lifestyle diseases.

75 percent of the calories from turkey tails come from fat.

Leala'ilepule told parliament last week the government should consider once again allowing the food's commercial importation.

Samoa Minister defends new prison spend

Sili Epa Tuioti said conditions inside Tafaigata Prison are inhumane and overcrowded and construction of the new jail needs to start before costs escalate.

The minister told the Samoa Observer the country needs to spend the money to ensure prisoners stop escaping and hurting innocent people.

He said the current prison was not providing any rehabilitation programmes and the new facility will be a highly secure, clean environment.

New Zealand Sevens smash sorry Samoa

Dickson crossed for New Zealand's first try after just two minutes, with Joe Ravouvou adding a second three minutes later.

Ahead 12-0 at half-time, the Kiwis extended their lead via Kurt Baker shortly after the restart.

Dickson added a second three minutes later, then 18-year-old former rugby league age group star Etene Nanai-Seturo crossed for New Zealand's fifth to wrap up the game.

Fiji thump Samoa 31-5 in their first pool game of Sydney 7s

Fiji scored five tries with debutant Alosio Naduva scoring his first try as well.

Fiji was leading 14-5 in the first half with tries from Amenoni Nasilasila and Mesulame Kunavula.

Looking at other results, England beat Spain 22-10, defending champion South Africa thrashed Papua New Guinea 50-0, France beat Wales 31-12, Argentina edged Kenya 7-5, New Zealand thumped Russia 61-0, Australia beat USA 26-19 while Scotland thrashed Canada 52-5.

Samoa will take on New Zealand and Russia this evening.

South Africa is the defending champion of the Sydney 7s.
