Samoa govt threatens college with permanent closure

The Prime Minister, Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, said this was the outcome of a meeting between cabinet and members of the old pupils and teachers associations.

RNZI reports the associations need to convince the government that they can take the necessary action to ensure Avele students would not be involved in brawls in the future.

Calls for corporal punishment in Samoan schools

The Government has temporarily shut down Avele College, after a brawl outside Malua Fou College last Friday morning.

RNZI correspondent in Samoa, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia said options are running out and students need to have the fear of corporal punishment to deter them.

Police report reveals multiple schools involved in brawls

Sixteen of them arrested on 28 April have been charged and will appear in court to stand trial on 17 May.

The charges are disorderly conduct, public disturbance, and fighting on public vehicles.

Police Spokesperson Superintendent, Sua Muliaga Tiumalu says their riot operation has been active and it included a search of Malua fou College for weapons.

"The situation has been handled by police with drastic measures. We visited the schools and did searches and that’s where some of the arrests came from," he adds.

"The threats made by Avele College students to other schools, teachers and colleges have caused widespread panic and the deployment of police riot operations," said the release.

Avele College students recently brawled with students from Malua fou College. A bus with several Avele students was stoned by Malua fou students last Friday.

Several students from both schools have been reportedly been arrested and charged by the police.

Members of the public have taken to Social Media like Facebook to express their views about the indefinite closure of Avele College.

RNZI reports two colleges, Avele and Malua fou, plan to talk to the phone companies, Bluesky and Digicel, to see if they can help to curb phone use.

This comes after students from both schools were involved in a brawl last Friday in which a bus with several Avele students was stoned by Malua fou college students.

Other vehicles at the scene were also affected.

Several students from both schools have been arrested and charged by the police, while Malua fou College was closed today as a result of the fight.

Samoa principals seek end to chronic fighting

Last week, students from Avele College, St Joseph's College, and Don Bosco Vocational Training School were involved in a violent brawl outside the main bus station in the capital, Apia. In a separate incident, students from Faleata College and the Church College of Samoa were also caught fighting.
