Williams gutted by omission from Samoa World Cup side

The 32 year old has played 18 tests, including all four pool matches at the 2011 World Cup, but played for Samoa since 2013.

Head coach Stephen Betham says when they selected the team to play the All Blacks and Pacific Nations Cup on form, Williams had just come back from injury.

The Stade Francais custodian will start for the Barbarians against his countrymen this weekend and says he's still extremely passionate about the game back in the islands.

Injury has ruled out prop James Johnston, halfback Pele Cowley and former captain David Lemi, while hot competition means the likes of flanker Faifili Levave and outside backs Sinoti Sinoti, Paul Williams and Ah See Tuala have missed the cut.

Samoa coach says PNC helped with World Cup selection dilemmas

Samoa were beaten 39-29 by Fiji in the PNC final on Tuesday and now have the next week off before reassembling in camp.

Stephen Betham says with a number of front-line players rested for the tournament he was impressed with the form of the new faces.

He says the World Cup picture is now a lot clearer.

Injuries from that match have taken their toll with electric centre Paul Perez, hooker Motu Matuu and halfback Pele Cowley all unavailable for the final.

Betham says the focus for team selection has been to pick a squad that would keep intensity for the full 80 minutes of the game.

He says they came out of the last game against Canada happy to take the win, but a little bruised from the things they didn't get right.
