Salman Rushdie: Man arrested after author attacked on stage

The Booker Prize winner, 75, was speaking at an event at the Chautauqua Institution at the time.

New York State Police said a man ran up onto the stage and attacked Mr Rushdie and an interviewer.

Police detained a suspect named as Hadi Matar, 24, from Fairview, New Jersey.

No motive or charges have yet been confirmed by police.

Mr Rushdie was stabbed at least once in the neck, and at least once in the abdomen. He was taken to a hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania, by helicopter.

The writer has been undergoing surgery, police and his agent confirmed.

ALB out for six months

Lienert-Brown suffered the injury in the Chiefs loss to the Blues in Super Rugby Pacific at the weekend.

He suffered a similar injury on the All Blacks end of year tour last November.

The Chiefs say the 26-year-old is expected to return to rugby after approximately six months.

The Rugby Championship is scheduled to start in August, with proceeded by a three test series against Ireland in New Zealand in July.

Fury has elbow surgery

According to an interview with British broadcaster BT Sport, John Fury said Tyson had cortisone injections in both elbows and had a six-hour operation to remove bone spurs.

"Tyson was very badly injured going into that fight," John Fury told BT Sport. "He was handicapped from the beginning. It wasn't a boxing match, was it?"

Fatialofa requires surgery

New Zealander Fatialofa injured his neck during the Warriors' 62-5 loss to Saracens at Allianz Park on Saturday and was taken to St Mary's Hospital in London.

The former Hurricanes forward remains in the intensive care unit but is awake and has his family with him.

A Warriors statement read: "Initial scans were positive showing no broken bones, however, [Fatialofa] has some bruising and swelling on his spinal cord.

"He will undergo surgery this evening in order to relieve the pressure caused by the bruising and help restore function.

All Black Ardie Savea to undergo surgery

He is the second marquee player to be missing from the Wellington Hurricanes after All Blacks fullback Beauden Barrett transferred to the Auckland Blues.

Savea, a finalist for the world player of the year, revealed the extent of the knee injury in an Instagram post when he said he could be sidelined for up to six months.

"Thought I'd let you guys know that I'll be getting surgery on my knee that I injured in the semi-final," Savea said.

"Unfortunately will be out for 5-6 months so will miss the majority of the Super Rugby season with my Canes brothers.

American boxer Day undergoes brain surgery

Day was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital after he was knocked out by his compatriot in the 10th round of a bout on the undercard for Oleksandr Usyk's heavyweight debut against Chazz Witherspoon.

The 27-year-old, who was removed from the ring on a stretcher, is in a coma following emergency surgery.

Day's promoter Lou DiBella tweeted: "Pat Day makes any room he is in a better place. I've never met anyone who's met Patrick and not liked him. Never heard him utter a mean word.

DNA surgery on embryos removes disease

The team at Sun Yat-sen University used a technique called base editing to correct a single error out of the three billion "letters" of our genetic code.

They altered lab-made embryos to remove the disease beta-thalassemia. The embryos were not implanted.

The team says the approach may one day treat a range of inherited diseases.

Australian man's thumb surgically replaced by toe

Zac Mitchell, 20, was injured in April while working on a remote farming property in Western Australia.

"A bull kicked my hand into the fence," Mr Mitchell said of the incident.

He underwent two unsuccessful operations to reattach his thumb before doctors opted to relocate his big toe in surgery lasting eight hours.

Mr Mitchell said fellow workers had attempted to preserve his thumb immediately after the accident.

"They put it in the esky [cooler] with some ice," he told the BBC.
