Isolation ends for a group in Tahiti

They are subject to all the restrictions in place to stop the spread of Covid-19, meaning they have to respect the curfew and need to carry a written attestation to justify their movements.

The government said those who are from the outer islands will have to await the lifting of the restrictions.

37 people have tested positive since the outbreak of the epidemic in French Polynesia three weeks ago.

One of the carriers is in hospital.

One of the carriers is in hospital care.

The latest update shows that for three consecutive days there has been an increase of the tally by just one.

All cases are in Tahiti and Moorea.

The first case was recorded three weeks ago.

     

Tahiti Covid-19 cases climb to 30

The government said one of them is in hospital.

According to a visiting WHO official, the infections are all in Tahiti and Moorea.

There are no reports of suspected cases in the outer islands but a number of students arriving in Rangiroa from Tahiti last week were isolation with symptoms of the illness.

Tahiti tourist exodus continues amid flight cancellations

The French High Commission in French Polynesia said since last Friday a total of 2600 tourists had been able to fly out of Tahiti.

This Friday, a last flight bound for France is scheduled to take off before regular services are suspended until at least late April.

The High Commission said since the start of the crisis an air bridge set up with the domestic carrier Air Tahiti had allowed 2,500 holiday makers to fly from the outer islands back to Tahiti.

Tahiti stops sale of alcohol amid Covid-19 crisis

The ban issued by the economics minister Teva Rohfritsch will be in force until April the 5th and follows a weekend of incidents in which people ignored limits on private and public gatherings.

Earlier, president Edouard Fritch said alcohol consumption had posed enormous problems.

Reports say orders to stay home have been widely ignored, prompting warnings that a curfew might be imposed.

23 people have tested positive to the virus in the territory.

Coronavirus: New cases in Tahiti, New Caledonia

The government said last night two people who arrived from Australia on their honeymoon have tested positive for the coronavirus.

They arrived at Tontouta airport on board an Aircalin flight from Sydney on Tuesday.

The government statement said the pair started displaying symptoms on Tuesday night and were immediately taken to a Noumea hospital.

He said other people who were on the plane have been taken to a suburban sports centre that has been converted into a quarantine centre.

Tahiti to stage 2024 surfing events

Organisers of the Games on French soil have confirmed the best surfers on the planet will be heading to compete in Teahupo'o in French Polynesia, subject to International Olympic Committee approval.

The possibility of using an artificial wave in Paris had been ruled out, but Biarritz was among the locations in France seen as having a strong case to host the events.

Lacanau, Les Landes and La Torche also hoped to be selected to stage the second edition of surfing at the Olympics, but it is instead set to take place in South Pacific waters.

Identities revealed in Tahiti child sex abuse case

The four were last week convicted for sexual abuse of minors and given jail terms of up to 30 months, with up to 18 months suspended.

Tahiti-infos reported that among the four, who are between 54 and 74 years old, is the former director of French Polynesia's Youth and Sports Institute, Antonio Arai.

A businessman, Leo Le Prado, who is a repeat offender, has been given a 30-month sentence, of which 18 are suspended.

Their contact was with girls all under the age of 15, with the youngest a homeless 12-year-old who lived with her boyfriend on the beach.

Call for more Oceania teams at the Beach Soccer World Cup

Tahiti pipped Solomon Islands 4-3 in the final of the OFC Beach Soccer Cup last weekend to qualify for the World Cup in Paraguay later this year.

The Tiki Toa had not won a regional title since 2011, although they were absent when the event was last held six years ago.

Head coach Naea Bennett says the triumph in Papeete meant a lot to the Tahiti team.

"It was very important to us because since 2011 we didn't participate in this competition so it was very good for us to be back again in the competition and to win it at home we are very happy," Naea Bennet said.

Tahiti court throws out ten nuclear claims

The ruling is in line with last month's expert advice, which took into account a law change that reintroduced a minimum figure of radiation exposure.

Earlier this year, the expert advice was to compensate the claimants.

The law change was inserted into the Finance Act in December reportedly to comply with the Public Health Act.

The veterans groups have been dismayed at the law change, saying now no more applications are likely to succeed.
