The meet is a warm up competition for the Pacific Games in July.

Triathlon Competition Manager Afoa Daniel Afoa says seven athletes from Fiji, American Samoa and Tonga will compete against Samoa.

"They are excited to utilise the test event as their opportunity to get some advantage of racing on the actual course for July. Additionally, the athletes will be joined by five local teams made up from FESA, Police and Samoa Events to ensure a competitive and fun day will be had by all."

The designation is available on the website of the Rio de Janeiro state's environmental agency.

The most recent pollution reading was taken from a sample this past Monday. The environmental agency didn't respond to requests for comment.

The area that has been ruled unfit for swimming is near where an Olympic qualifier and Paratriathlon event begin Saturday. Athletes are already getting in the water as they prepare for the event.
