With the support of the Samoa One-UN Youth Employment Programme Samoa 1UN YEP) on 19 August 2017, WIBDI inaugurated its new processing facility at Nu’u fitted out with new modern food processing equipment, laboratory, cooling rooms and office facilities.

The project is funded by the United Nations Development Programme Sustainable Development Goals Trust Fund.

WIBDI is a well-established, multi-award winning NGO that specializes in organic agriculture and employment of youth and women in the farm-to-table value chain for both domestic and international markets.

The signing this week brings the project another step closer to launch and Samoa’s climate and energy security goals. 

Known as ‘IMPRESS’ (“Improving the Performance and Reliability of RE Power System in Samoa”), the new project focuses on mitigation. It forms part of the Government’s plan to move away from fossil fuels and reach a target of 100% of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2025.  

Funding was provided by UN One Youth Employment Programme.

The groups produce handicrafts with recycled objects and build furniture from used tires.

Other initiatives are obtaining skills in repairing sewing machines and other activities aimed at increasing number of youth in the production process.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed recently between the Samoan Culinary Association and the Ministry of Ministry of Women, Community & Social Development, UN’s partner in implementing Youth Employment Programme projects, to support the agreement.

As a result of this funding 18 youth will be trained in culinary skills and techniques, with the prospect of finding an employment in hospitality and tourism industry.

Samoa One-UN YEP stays focused on developing more opportunities for youth training and employment in Samoa.

As he had always enjoyed cooking for his family, he jumped at the opportunity to further improve his cooking skills when he saw a TV advertisement inviting youths to apply for a Culinary Training Programme. 

Corruption is an issue that affects all countries around the world.

It contributes to a lack of trust and confidence in governance and leadership, undermines democracy, and sets countries back economically.

In a statement, the UNDP says: “Strengthening anti-corruption measures and building transparent institutions is a priority task for governments and citizens around the world, including in Papua New Guinea.
