Uber powers emergency food deliveries in Ukraine

The tech firm is working with the UN's World Food Programme (WFP).

It's difficult for large delivery trucks to access some parts of Ukraine because of structural damage and the threat of attack.

Uber's platform enables the WFP to co-ordinate a fleet of smaller vehicles.

The WFP is hand-picking its own drivers and vehicles, but some are former Uber drivers who worked in Ukraine before the Russian invasion.

Uber boss Dara Khosrowshahi said his firm had given the WFP "their own private-label Uber".

Police reunited with family after two years

The Samoa Observer reports the officers were initially to serve a 12-month mission but the global lockdown from the covid-19 pandemic delayed their return.

Police Commissioner Fuiavailili Egon Keil and senior officers held a welcome function for the officers this week.

Deputy Police Commissioner, Papalii Monalisa Tiai-Keti, says the officers arrived three weeks ago and were quarantined for two weeks before being released last Friday.

Papalii added that the police officers showed courage being away from their families for so long amidst a global pandemic. 

UN inquiry finds French air strike killed Mali civilians

France's defence ministry disputed the finding, saying the 3 January strike targeted an "armed terrorist group".

France has 5,100 troops across the Sahel region to fight militants tied to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.

The UN carried out an investigation after locals alleged that a helicopter had fired on people attending a wedding near Bounti village in central Mali.

The investigation found that a wedding had taken place, and there had been "about 100 civilians at the site of the strike", AFP news agency quoted the UN report as saying.

The programme also reflects the UNODC’s objective of supporting governments and sports organisations in their efforts to safeguard sport from corruption and crime.

Despite deals with the Ethiopian government, humanitarian agencies say they are being denied access to Tigray.

Government forces have been battling Tigray fighters since 4 November.

The government says it is in control of the region and the conflict is over. But Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) says it is still fighting on various fronts.

UN urges Indonesia to protect Koman

They also urged Indonesia to protect people's rights to peaceful protest and those reporting on protests in West Papua, and to ensure access to the internet

Earlier this month a police warrant was issued for Ms Koman, who is believed to be in Australia, after police claimed she spread fake news online.

Indonesian authorities have blamed disinformation and Papuan independence activists for a recent wave of protests in the region

Top United Nations official 'forced himself on me'

She alleged she was offered a promotion if she accepted an apology from the man and claimed that the organisation failed to take her complaint seriously.

In an exclusive interview with CNN, Martina Brostrom accused a UN assistant secretary general, Dr. Luiz Loures, of grabbing her in a hotel elevator, forcibly kissing her and trying to drag her to his room during a conference in 2015. He denies the allegations.

The right to sufficient shelter

This right is recognised every first Monday of October by the United Nations as the World Habitat Day.

It reflects on the state of human settlements and their right to sufficient shelter.

For this year, the World Habitat Day is sharing the date with the International Day of Non-Violence, also observed by the UN.

This day is also a global observance that promotes non-violence through education and public awareness.

It is annually held on October 2 to coincide with renowned Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday
