USP President and Vice Chancellor Professor Rajesh Chandra says this year there are more than 30,000 students enrolled at USP.

This is almost double the number of students who were enrolled at the institute eight years ago.

"We (USP) are doing really well. We’ve grown so much over the years and the numbers are at its highest ever since 2008. I would say that USP today is steadily moving along the journey of transforming itself from a good university that people accept it to be, to being an excellent university," he said.

Its main purpose was to brief the diplomats on the outcomes of the 83rd USP Council Meeting; progress towards implementation of the USP Strategic Plan (2013-2018); update them on USP’s role in European Development Fund (EDF) 11 Pacific Regional Indicative Programme; Regional ICT Initiative and strengthened CROP ICT Working Group; and to discuss USP’s plans for its 50th Anniversary celebrations and how PICs can be actively engaged in marking this important event.

The team was led by Professor Dag Rune Olsen, Rector, University of Bergen (DRO) and comprised Professor Tore Furevik, Director of the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research; Professor Edvard Hviding, Director of the Bergen Pacific Studies Research Group; and Ms Nina B. Dahl, Studies Adviser in Anthropology

Professor Olsen stated that there are opportunities for further collaboration and expansion of the existing collaboration between the two universities.

 The students are from USP’s Member Countries and varying disciplines including Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Postgraduate Diploma in Education and PhD.

In congratulating the students, USP’s Director Development, Marketing, Communications and Alumni Mr Jaindra Karan said this was indeed a great achievement.

Solomon Islands is one of the island countries under the Coastal-Community Adaptation Project (C-CAP), along with Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Papua New Guinea (PNG), Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. 

USP Project Community Liaison Officer, Teddy Fong said their PaCE-SD Community Coordinators continue to play an important role in mobilising communities in support of C-CAP activities in the nine (9) countries that the project is engaged in.

 Dr Paunga made the comment while officially handing over the Samoa appeal for Post Winston Save the Children’s Fundraiser to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Save the Children’s Fund (SCF), Iris Low-McKenzie, at Laucala on 5 August.

Coordinated by USP’s Pacific Outreach Programme for Polynesia (POPP) Coordinator, Allan Alo and Fiji Airways, Dr Paunga acknowledged his hard work for spearheading the event at the Alafua campus.

The Pacific Regional Federation for Resilience Professionals (PRFRP) will boost the skills, education, training and employment opportunities for diverse professionals dedicated to climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction and maintaining ecosystem services in a highly vulnerable region.

The launch by the European Union, Pacific Community (SPC) and The University of the South Pacific (USP) took place at the Pacific Platform for Disaster Risk Management in Suva, Fiji, within the margins of Pacific Resilience Week 2016.
