New Caledonia bracing for Cyclone Cook

The cyclone caused flooding in Vanuatu's central islands yesterday and is now set to hit New Caledonia's main island.

The storm's centre is forecast to pass to the west of the Loyalty Islands, before making landfall on the east coast of the main island Grand Terre.

Cyclone Cook will be the first to directly hit New Caledonia since 2003.

A level-one alert is in force for New Caledonia's north and outer island, meaning properties and livestock should be secured.

After a team introduction, Champions Program coordinator, Wilfred Koran, made a presentation to the Heads of Schools and their Zone Curriculum Advisor on the content of the Champions Program and what the schools will expect if they are being visited by NASI.

During his presentation, Mr. Koran informed teachers that as part of the program and its legacy in schools, teaching materials on environment, custom & culture, health & sports will be produced to assist teachers with their available teaching resources.

Pacific surveillance operation picks up Illegal fishers

Nine Pacific countries ran Operation Rai Balang 2017 which co-ordinated out of the Forum Fisheries Agency surveillance centre in Solomon Islands.

Operation Rai Balang 2017 covered 14.7 million square km and saw a total of 918 detections of fisheries vessels, 93 aircraft sightings, and 50 boardings 30 of them at sea.

Of the seven arrests five recorded in Vanuatu were long liners flagged to China with minor infringements.

In FSM, a purse seiner flagged to China allegedly had its vessel monitoring system turned off at the time of its inspection.

WHO says dengue is spreading across the Pacific

Fiji has now confirmed 143 cases, Nauru has confirmed more than 50, and 13 have been confirmed in American Samoa.

That follows outbreaks in Solomon Islands which has had more than 10,000 dengue cases in the last seven months, and in Vanuatu which has had more than 1700 cases since November.

RNZ reports in New Caledonia three people have died and a health emergency has been declared as more than 1-thousand cases have been recorded since September.

     

Vanuatu and Fiji cricketers set up final showdown

Japan raced to 46 for 1 against Vanuatu before collapsing to be 79 all out in Bendigo.

The Melanesians lost both openers in the first three overs but recovered to reach their target with six wickets and more than 31 overs to spare.

But coach Shane Deitz said the scoreboard doesn't tell the full story.

"We bowled first and they got off to a little bit of a flyer and smacked out quicks around a little bit," he said.

"Then a couple of our first and second change bowlers came on and bowled a better line and length and tied it up a bit.

Samoa captain Ben Mailata starred with bat and ball in a seven wicket win over Japan.

The 32 year old claimed 5 for 27 as Japan were dismissed for 144 and then led the way with the bat, top-scoring with 58 not out from 52 balls, including five sixes, as the Polynesian side overhauled their target inside 26 overs.

Pacific countries get visa-free access to Belarus

Passport holders from Samoa, Vanuatu and the Federated States of Micronesia can enter Belarus for up to five days if they arrive at the international airport in Minsk.

The president of Belarus signed a decree to ease travel for a broad range of countries, including the US.

In September, neighbouring Russia signed an agreement with Vanuatu for visa-free travel.

Fiji passport holders also have visa-free access to Russia but no other such access in Europe except to Ireland.
