Girls Takeover Parliament held in Tonga

Twenty-six girls had the opportunity to learn more about parliament in the Girls Takeover Parliament or Falealea ‘o Tonga programme.

The participants were able to voice their perspectives on matters of national interest in a parliament setting.

Girls Takeover Parliament is a Jasiri Australia initiative.

Jasiri Australia partnered with the Commonwealth Youth Council this year in an effort to push girls to takeover parliament as an innovative programme that allows young women and girls the opportunity to voice their perspectives on matters of national interest in a parliament setting.

The Commonwealth Youth Council aims to carve out social, political and economic space to make young women and girls visible, change perceptions about what is possible for them, and inspire others to join the movement.

Digicel Tonga was happy to be part of this initiative by encouraging women leadership in Tonga and being able to sit down and discuss important motions in a parliament setting.

Digicel said it is proud to strongly support young women and girls to be able to learn about the concepts of democracy, good governance, transparency, and accountability. It is a program on a mission to show the world the benefits of unleashing girls' potential and inspire more women and girls to enter politics.
