Double Gold for Niue Honey in UK

Niue Honey's general manager says the company is looking forward to a big year in 2017 after its medal haul at Britain's National Honey Show.

RNZ reports Richard Duncan said they competed in two categories, winning two golds and the highly coveted Medal of Ukraine for the best honey in the world outside Britain.

He said all their current production is sold to New Zealand as ingredients for other food products, but that will change next year with initiatives including the launch of their top-end brand.

"We've got a big year planned for 2017 for Niue Honey. We'll have our own bottled product. We've now got some international recognition for the quality of our product. And we've got a lot of enquiries for people who want to buy actually. We're doing some partnerships with Otago University next year in terms of some research on the honey and on the bee stock."

Mr Duncan said once their packaging is finalised in the next few months, they'll be making a marketing push with their new high-end product.

Niue Honey aims to get 4000 hives in production next year with a yearly output of 300 tonnes in five years from the current 25.
