Justin Bieber urges fans to make NHS Choir's single the UK Christmas number one

Tis the season for giving, and Justin Bieber is feeling charitable - urging fans to buy a charity single, instead of his.

The Canadian star's song, Love Yourself, is neck-and-neck with Britain's National Health Service (NHS) Choir's surprise smash-hit A Bridge Over You to become the UK's official Christmas number one.

On Wednesday, there were just 662 sales separating frontrunner Bieber from the NHS single.

Now, Bieber has thrown his celebrity weight behind the charity single - urging his almost 72 million Twitter followers to give it the number one spot.

The choir, formed of doctors, nurses and physiotherapists from the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS branches, released the song two years ago, but its push to make it the Christmas number one began during a doctors' contracts row earlier this year.

A Bridge Over You was a mix of Simon & Garfunkel's A Bridge Over Troubled Water and Coldplay's Fix You, and was described by the choir as "an emotional celebration of the thousands of NHS staff who go the extra mile every day".

The funds raised from sales will go to two charities, Carers UK and mental health organisation Mind.

The choir tweeted its thanks to Bieber for his support, saying "Next time you're in the UK, we should have a singalong together."
