Sonny Bill Williams meets his match in sevens guru Sir Gordon Tietjens

He's conquered league, rugby and made a pretty decent fist of boxing, but it seems Sonny Bill Williams is still getting to grips with Sir Gordon Tietjens' infamous training regime.

The code-hopping superstar has started preparations for his latest sporting quest - an Olympic sevens gold medal with Tietjens and co in Rio this year.

And judging by his latest post on Twitter, the transition to the abbreviated format has certainly been an eye-opener for 'SBW'.

Tietjens is renowned for testing his players' physical limits to the absolute extreme as he strives to have the fittest team on the world series circuit.

Williams, of course, is no slouch but he was feeling the pain following a recent training session, tweeting a picture of himself lying on the floor wearing recovery socks with baby daughter Imaan.

"Sevens rugby training ain't no joke! Even my daughter needs to rock the recovery socks haha" Williams said.

He also posted a picture including New Zealand sevens stalwart DJ Forbes, saying: "Back on the grind with some of the @nz7s brothers".

Williams is set to make his New Zealand debut in Wellington at the end of the month where Tietjens will be hoping his presence as well as fellow All Black Liam Messam can inspire the side after a disappointing start to the world series.

The Kiwis finished fourth in the season-opener in Dubai before being knocked out of the cup quarterfinals by Argentina in Cape Town to sit seventh on the standings.

With ticket sales slow to date, New Zealand Rugby will also be hoping Williams can draw in a bumper crowd to Westpac Stadium.
