COVID-19 positive

The New South Wales health authority issued an alert late on Tuesday about two flights between Wellington and Sydney linked to the case.

It said passengers who were on one flight into Wellington, and one flight back to Sydney last weekend, are considered close contacts of a COVID-19 case.

The flights were Qantas QF163, which left Sydney at 7.05pm on Friday 18 June and landed in Wellington at 12.12am on Saturday; and Air New Zealand NZ247, which left Wellington at 10.13am on Monday 21 June, arriving in Sydney at 11.33am.

In a statement, the ministry said the usual protocol of isolating the case, interviewing them and tracing their contacts and movements was under way.

There are no new cases of Covid-19 in the community today.

The ministry said more information would be provided later today and the case would be included in tomorrow's totals.

The historical case was a recent returnee from Somalia via UAE who was tested on day 12 of their stay, but was considered recovered, the ministry said.

Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto, says they are all receiving treatment and will be allowed to complete their deployment once they recover.

He told FBC that 90 troops in Iraq and 20 in Sinai who tested positive have to be quarantined.

Naupoto says 41 peacekeepers in Iraq have almost completed their isolation period and are about to return to active duty.

According to the military, deployments will continue with all personnel receiving the necessary vaccine pre departure and upon arrival at their mission stations.

476 Fijians are deployed in six missions.

The deceased was identified as senior nurse Warrant Officer Tomasi Dau Saumadu.

José Luis Díaz of the UN Peacekeeping Strategic Communications Department said the soldier was with the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU) and died on March 30 in Baghdad.

“The cause of death is believed to be cardiac arrest,” he told the Fiji Times.

“As of April 2, having conducted extensive testing, we can confirm that within the Baghdad-based UNGU, there were 90 positive cases (there are 372 UNGU members).

The 28-year-old was reportedly seen dancing at his brother's wedding.

The Giants' scheduled pre-season game against the Seibu Lions on Wednesday was cancelled.
