Energy drinks

Energy drinks driving teen obesity - study

Researchers at Sydney University surveyed more than 3000 teenagers and found energy and diet sodas were causing the most damage.

The study found about 30 per cent of teenagers who drank at least a cup of sugary drinks a day were overweight or obese.

But those consuming energy and sports drinks, or flavoured water, were even more likely to be overweight.

Almost 20 percent of teens in the study drank energy drinks.

The study says all sweetened beverages are linked to oral health problems.

Teen dies from too much caffeine

Davis Allen Cripe died from a caffeine-induced cardiac event causing a probable arrhythmia, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts announced in a news conference Monday. During an arrhythmia, or abnormal heart rhythm, the heart may not be able to pump enough blood to the body, and lack of blood flow affects the brain, heart and other organs.

The teen consumed three caffeine-laced drinks -- a cafe latte, large Diet Mountain Dew and an energy drink -- in a two-hour period before collapsing in his classroom at Spring Hill High School on April 26, Watts said.

'Wide awake drunk' on energy drinks and alcohol mix

The caffeine contained in energy drinks can make people feel wide awake and encourage them to drink more than normal.

Medics say this could also cause problems sleeping and a raised heart rate, although more research is needed.

Charity Drinkaware does not recommend mixing alcohol and energy drinks.

Mixing spirits and liqueurs with energy drinks, such as Red Bull and Monster, has become increasingly popular - in pubs and clubs, and at home.
