Samoa’s FAST Party leader sworn in as first female PM in makeshift Parliament

The Faatuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) Party leader and her newly-elected Members of Parliament took their oath of office in a makeshift Parliament after they were locked out of the main complex this morning.

Tuala Tevaga Iosefo Ponifasio has been appointed Deputy Prime Minister.

Under Samoa's constitution, parliament must sit within 45 days of the election and today marked the last day to do that.

FAST Party members turned up to Parliament for a swearing in ceremony this morning only to find that they had been locked out.

Fiame Naomi Mataafa, the opposition leader set to become Samoa's first female prime minister after a weeks-long political impasse, said she intended to maintain good relations with China but she had more pressing needs to address.

The proposed construction of the wharf in Vaiusu Bay has been a divisive issue in Samoa, playing a part in April elections where long-serving leader Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi lost his parliamentary majority.

Her FAST party is on the cusp of a major upset after Friday's vote, leaving incumbent Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi fighting for his political life after 22 years in office.

The result is even more extraordinary because FAST has managed to challenge one of the world's longest-serving democratically elected leaders just nine months after the party was formed.

The hastily called session is to introduce amendments to the Electoral Act which had been ordered by the court.
