Facebook's Giphy deal investigated by competition authority

Giphy's vast library of looping short video animations is hugely popular in Facebook's apps.

But it also provides animations to competitors like TikTok, Snapchat and Twitter.

Now, the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating whether the purchase is a problem.

It has sent an enforcement order to Facebook, effectively putting a hold on any merging of the companies until its investigation is over.

Announcing the acquisition in May this year, Facebook said that half of Giphy's traffic comes from Facebook apps, including Whatsapp and Instagram.

USP to enforce report on mismanagement and abuse of office

BDO Auckland was engaged to investigate alleged corruption at the university.

According to the Islands Business, the USP Council said in a statement the BDO report had resulted in a "range of findings and recommendations that will need to be addressed to ensure the sound operation of the university".

However, the council did not say what the BDO's recommendations are.

The allegations were raised in a paper by the Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Pal Ahluwalia, titled Issues, Concerns and Breaches of Past Management and Financial Decisions.

Rape investigation into Ronaldo dropped

Ronaldo, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time and plays for the Italian club Juventus, has maintained he is innocent of rape.

The allegation made headlines last year after Las Vegas police said they were investigating it.

The case stems from a June 13, 2009, call from a woman to Las Vegas police. She reported that she had been sexually assaulted and police took her to the hospital for an examination, the Clark County District Attorney's Office said in a statement.

But she declined to identify the person who she said assaulted her.

Former Samoa election commissioner investigated

Papali'i was fired more than three years ago for non-compliance after an investigation by the Public Service Commission.

The attorney general, Lemalu Herman Retzlaff, told the Samoa Observer the commission had uncovered evidence that led to the police investigation.

Papali'i told the newspaper he had no idea he was being investigated, adding he would defend himself.

 

     

Samoa govt official under investigation

Samoa Observer reports the deputy chief executive of the ministry, Ve'atauia Fa'atasi Puleiata has confirmed the investigation.

The paper said police were called in after an initial investigation by the Ministry of Finance began in September.

     

Samoa launches another inquiry into vaccination deaths

The government has set up a three person commission of inquiry to be headed by prominent Samoan judge and diplomat, Tuiloma Neroni Slade.

The other two members include highly qualified medical practitioner Leo'o Tautalatasi Dr. John Adams and Lilia Si'itia, who has years of experience in the nursing profession with the Ministry of Health.

It will look at Ministry of Health procedures for the administering of the MMR vaccine injections and alleged discrepancies relating to the deaths of the two young children.

Samoa police under investigation over AK-47

The AK-47 weapon was handed in to police by the customs to be destroyed during an arms amnesty, but instead it had been kept in the armoury and used during police raids.

The acting Police Commissioner, Afamasaga Michael So'onalole, said he had ordered the investigation after complaints from the public and media inquiries after allegations of the weapon being carried by a senior officer during raids.

He said the registration of the unlawful gun under the name of the police ministry was thought to have been ordered by the suspended police commissioner.

Air New Zealand investigating after inappropriate images of staff leaked

An employment lawyer says the images could bring the airline into "disrepute", and may amount to serious misconduct.

The photos show a pilot posing with a blow-up doll inside an aircraft. It is understood the images were shared to Facebook and Instagram.

Another video, which appears to have been posted to Snapchat, shows a flight attendant moving through the cabin, spitting water.

The video is captioned: "Wish I could spit on passengers like this".

An Air New Zealand spokeswoman said the airline was "shocked and appalled" by the images.
