United eased past Swansea 3-1 on Sunday to end a four-match winless streak in the Premier League.

Mourinho was forced to use a make-shift defence for the trip to Liberty Stadium, with duo Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw late withdrawals, while Daley Blind was only fit enough for the bench.

Ashley Young, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian completed the back four, and Mourinho had some words for players who deemed themselves unfit on the weekend.

Belgium international De Bruyne was substituted at half-time during Saturday's 1-1 draw at home to Southampton after taking a knock to the calf.

The 25-year-old opened the scoring when City claimed a 2-1 win over United last month but Guardiola told a pre-match news conference he had "no way" of playing in the latest derby showdown.

"He had a knock on the leg and he cannot play," Guardiola said, before casting doubt on De Bruyne's participation in City's matches over the coming week.

Mourinho endured an embarrassing return to Stamford Bridge as former club Chelsea piled on the misery in a 4-0 Premier League rout on Sunday.

United were put to the sword early, conceding a goal to Pedro inside 30 seconds before Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard and N'Golo Kante consigned the visitors to a third defeat of the season, leaving Mourinho and Co. seventh in the table.

United have no time to lick their wounds, with arch-rivals Manchester City awaiting in the fourth round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

Although he started in the EFL Cup, Rooney was dropped in the wake of United's 3-1 loss at Watford last month.

The England international understood manager Jose Mourinho's decision after his display at Vicarage Road.

"Listen, I had a bad game at Watford. I played bad, I know that and I understand that," Rooney said, via The Independent.

"I think if he was picking the next team on the back of that, I understand not playing. The team have done well, certainly in the Leicester game since that.

United are third in Group A, behind Fenerbahce and Feyenoord, following a tight victory for Jose Mourinho's men, with captain Wayne Rooney again left on the bench.

Ibrahimovic scored for his seventh different club in European competition, but the veteran striker thinks United found it difficult to create space against a determined Ukrainian outfit.

"It was not an easy game," Ibrahimovic told BT Sport. "We played good and created some chances but it was a difficult game.

The champions play Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, with the two managers having clashed in the past.

Mourinho called Ranieri "a loser" after replacing him at Chelsea and also insulted him while being the Inter Milan boss.

Ranieri said: "Mourinho is a fantastic manager, intelligent, clever. [The issues] were a long time ago”.

Mourinho replaced Ranieri at Chelsea in 2004 and said the club considered the Italian to be "a loser", before the pair repeatedly fell out while both managing in Serie A.

 United faced scrutiny after losing three straight matches before ending the run in a 3-1 EFL Cup win at Northampton Town on Wednesday.

Skipper Rooney has faced particular scrutiny over his form, with many pundits questioning whether he remains worthy of a starting berth in Jose Mourinho's line-up with the 30-year-old scoring just once in five Premier League outings.

But England's record goal scorer is paying little attention and says that the criticism aimed at him is nothing new.

A hamstring injury delayed the start of Sane's City career but Guardiola claims the 20-year-old, who replaced Ilkay Gundogan in the second half of City's 4-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday, is now ready to be involved from the start of a game.

Guardiola told reporters after the victory over Bournemouth: "He was ready to start today. But I decided to play [others].

Goals from Etienne Capoue, Juan Zuniga and a stoppage time penalty from Troy Deeney overwhelmed the visitors, who had levelled with a solitary strike from Marcus Rashford, in Sunday's big match.

It was the first time Watford had beaten United since 1986.

The Premier League said it was also the first time Mourinho had lost three consecutive games as a manager since 2006.

Although the 'Special One' did suffer three successive defeats at Chelsea in 2015, before he was sacked by the Londoners, one of those was on penalties after a draw in the Capital One (League) Cup.
