Last year, 84 per cent of Australians owned a smartphone — and among young people, that figure was 94 per cent.

And our dependence on mobile devices has crept up on us over time, leading to a range of problems, University of Washington Information School's Professor David Levy said.

The Weather Office is taking advantage of mobile phones to provide one of its essential services to the public.

“Look forward to receiving the latest weather update on your mobile phones,” said Chief Weather Officer Mulipola Ausitalia Titimaea.

“The two main service providers will text the reports regularly using the same technology which they have been utilizing to advertise their promotions via text messages from time to time. We are slowly transiting to the new mobile app to reach more people effectively and efficiently.”

Many of these tips and tricks aren't well known, even to veterans of the 1.5 billion-strong people-connector and time-waster. Facebook is constantly updating its service, adding new features or tweaking old ones. A lot can slip through the cracks even if you are scrolling through your friends' updates several times a day.
