'Export' of measles to Pacific 'very disappointing' - NZ Opposition MP

A sick traveller from Auckland carried the disease to Samoa, where seven measles cases have been confirmed.

There are also 169 suspected cases in Samoa, including one that lead to the death of an infant.

And in Tonga, a measles outbreak was declared yesterday after members of a school rugby team contracted the virus on a trip to New Zealand.

Sixty-eight cases have been confirmed in Tonga.

New Zealand has to help its Pacific neighbours tackle the disease, the MP Shane Reti said.

Call for Australia and NZ to help fund Pacific rugby

Tonga, Samoa and Fiji's performances at the World Cup were hampered by a lack of economic resources, Fiji economist Wadan Narsey said.

He said if a Pacific team was included in the Super Rugby competition, it would strengthen Pacific rugby unions financially.

Hundreds of millions of dollars in aid that New Zealand and Australia gave to the Pacific had a negligible political impact, he said.

Māori, Pasifika teens suffer more ethnicity-related discrimination from teachers than peers

The report, He Whakaaro, says nearly 15 percent of Māori students and 12 percent of Pasifika students said teachers were unfair to them because of their ethnicity in the previous year, but only 3 percent complained of bullying related to their ethnicity.

The figures were based on new analysis of data gathered in the Youth 2000 University of Auckland survey of 8500 teenagers in 2012.

NZ win first gold medals at Pacific Games

The Auckland teenager snatched 94kg and clean and jerked 112kg for a 206kg total, to win all three gold medals in the women's 76kg division.

It really does mean a lot because it just shows that all my hard work is paying off, at the end of the day, and I'm just very pleased with myself and all of my team members."

Marshall and Foran remain in Kiwis squad

The veteran halves are in a 19-strong group announced by coach Michael Maguire, with regular five-eighth Kodi Nikorima having been ruled out of contention by the Warriors.

Maguire confirmed Dallin Watene-Zelezniak will retain the captaincy, even though a shift to the wing or centres looms following the return to availability of star fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, who missed all of last year's five Tests.

Veteran hooker Issac Luke is in the group of eight players cut from the 27-man group unveiled midweek ahead of Saturday's clash in Auckland.

Pacific contribution to NZ highlighted in Queen's Birthday Honours

Minister for Pacific Peoples Aupito William Sio says it is exciting to see the recognition of so many people that represent our diverse Pacific identities in Aotearoa, and people who we all know add significant value to making New Zealand a better place for us all by their constant service and advocacy for our youth, children, women, elderly groups, disabilities groups, LGBTQI+ groups, and trade unions.

"All we want for Christmas is a fair deal" - Sistema Plastics workers

E Tū union members have walked off the job five times this year, some fed up with working 60 hours a week on minimum wage at the Māngere factory.

Solo mother of four, Maria Latu, has been with the company for more than three years.

She works 12 hours on night shift for $16.50 an hour and says she's struggling to meet her family's basic needs.

"Standing 12 hours, $16.50 and we're only asking for 25 cents more and they're still not giving it.

NZ Ministry of Health issues dengue fever warning for travellers to the Pacific

Earlier this year the Ministry launched a social media and online campaign to raise more awareness about the diseases mosquitoes in some countries can carry.

It was prompted by recent outbreaks of dengue at the time, mainly in Auckland, among travellers returning from the Pacific.

The Ministry of Health reports that from August last year through to March this year, 263 dengue cases were reported in New Zealand, with 222 believed to have been acquired in the Pacific Islands.

Parker wants to make NZ, Samoa proud in unification heavyweight fight

Unbeaten champions Parker and Joshua will unify their WBO, WBA, IBF and IBO belts next weekend at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

The 26-year-old Parker knows he is the underdog heading into the biggest fight of 2018, but speaking to reporters at his first press conference since arriving in the UK, the Kiwi is motivated by the fact he thinks "the public are underestimating my team and me".

"They're basing it on my last three fights and see Joshua as unbeatable but I have an element of surprise," he added.
